The National Disability Card Has an Updated Card Design - Here's What's Changed

In July 2026 we introduced an updated card design, which features a number of enhancements that make the National Disability Card even more durable, secure, and inclusive.
Here's everything you need to know about the new look you'll notice when you next renew your card.
Enhanced Security and Improved Quality
We have invested heavily in new laser printing technology at our printing facility in Suffolk, UK. Our new advanced printing process produces a higher-quality finish while incorporating enhanced security features, including our signature guilloche patterns and custom backgrounds and symbols. This gives businesses and venues even greater confidence in recognising a genuine National Disability Card.
Updated Card Holder Photograph
Your photo on the front of the card now appears in black and white. This is thanks to our new laser printing process, helping deliver a consistent, high-quality finish. It also brings the National Disability Card in line with expected photo standards for identity documents such as driving licenses.

Shorter Unique Card Numbers
We've simplified the unique card number at the top right of your card - reducing length from 19 digits to just 9 digits. This makes the number much easier to read, remember, and reference when needed.
If you already have an existing National Disability Card, your current 19-digit card number will continue to be valid for access to discounts and benefits through our website. Nothing changes until it's time to renew your card.

Improved Durability
We've also made a small but important improvement to the International Symbol of Access on the front of the card. The updated printing method makes it far less likely to become scratched or worn through everyday use, so your card stays pristine for longer.

Greater Accessibility with Braille
In a first for the disability identification landscape, we're introducing Braille for the first time to every new National Disability Card. We are the only disability card scheme in the UK to use Braille identifiers, and we are delighted to be pioneering this accessibility feature as standard in our space.

Your card now contains the initials 'NDC' in Braille on the back, meaning blind and visually impaired card holders can now more easily identify the card in their wallet or handbag.
Compatible with Your Existing Lanyards
If you already have a National Disability Card lanyard or Verified Hidden Disability lanyard with its attached card holder, there's no need to replace it. Our updated cards use the same size and will continue to fit perfectly with your existing lanyard.
Does This Affect My Existing Card?
All existing National Disability Cards remain fully valid until their printed expiry date. They will continue to be recognised by venues as usual, and you can continue to login on our website as usual.
When it's time to renew, or if you need a replacement card, you'll automatically receive one of our updated cards with all of the improvements listed in this article.
Looking Ahead
These updates are designed to improve security, durability, accessibility, and ease of use while ensuring a smooth transition for all of our card holders. Existing cards continue to work exactly as they always have, and when the time comes to renew, you'll benefit from the latest card design.
We're proud to continue investing in improvements that make the National Disability Card even better for everyone who carries one. Thank you for being part of our community, and we look forward to providing you with your new card when it's time for your next renewal.
Conclusion
Our updated National Disability Card and National Carers Card represent another step forward in making the scheme more secure, accessible, and user-friendly for everyone. While the design has evolved, the purpose remains the same, to provide card holders with a trusted way to verify their disability and access discounts and benefits. If you already have a current card, there's nothing you need to do. Your existing card will remain valid until its expiry date, and when it's time to renew, you'll automatically receive the new design with all of its enhanced features. We're proud to continue improving our cards to better meet the needs of our community and thank you for being part of the National Disability and Carers Card Scheme.
